THE JOURNEY START
RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor Course
This five day course will include sessions on land using a simulator, on the water practicing ‘live’ group teaching techniques and control, plus a number of classroom based sessions. This is the first rung on the ladder to forging a career in the watersports industry.
Prerequisites
- Powerboat Level 2 Certificate.
- First Aid certificate (recognised by the RYA).
- RYA membership card.
- Safe and Fun course completion certificate.
- Evidence of your personal windsurfing ability at non-planing intermediate or above.
MOVING ON UP!
RYA Intermediate Windsurfing Instructor Course
The Intermediate Instructor Course provides the training to teach up to intermediate non-planing and/or planing within the RYA National Windsurfing Scheme, plus stage 3 and/or 4 of the RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme. Candidates must have good experience as a Start Instructor (minimum 50 hours logged) as well as a wide theoretical knowledge and passion for windsurfing.
Through an enjoyable mixture of practical on-water exercises, simulator work and informal presentation of theory topics, this course aims to improve your windsurfing skills and knowledge and improve your overall coaching techniques. You will develop your knowledge of the RYA Fastfwd formula to understand and help your students to make a smooth progression through the intermediate competencies.
Prerequisites
- Non-planing: Intermediate planing personal sailing certificate; beach-starting and non-planing carve gybe clinics.
- Planing: Advanced personal sailing certificate with waterstart and carve gybe clinics.
- Valid First aid certificate.
- Pre-course work.
THE PINNACLE
RYA Advanced Windsurfing Instructor Course
This is where the fun really starts! The aim of the course is to be trained up to the level of RYA Advanced (plus the 4 advanced clinics) within the RYA National Windsurfing Scheme. Candidates must have significant experience as an intermediate planing instructor (minimum 100 hours logged) as well as a deep engagement in the sport – with a wide theoretical knowledge and passion for windsurfing.

THE MANAGERIAL PATHWAY
RYA Windsurfing Senior Instructor Course
The RYA’s SI (Senior Instructor) course is an intensive yet enjoyable four days with a chance to learn a great deal from the trainers and the other course candidates. The trainers will do all they can to support you in your progression. This course is designed for those with varied experience in the delivery of RYA windsurfing tuition, yet with a current windsurfing qualification of RYA Start Windsurfing at the least.
The aim of the course is to help candidates to become competent in the planning, organising and management of courses within the RYA National & Youth Windsurfing Schemes. This will involve sessions afloat as well as group discussions. The course will help you to understand the requirements of RYA Training Centre recognition and will highlight the need for the SI to be patient and resourceful as well as being able to confidently manage people and situations. The overall aim of the SI is to facilitate courses that are enjoyable, safe and where a good quality of learning takes place.
Prerequisites
- First Aid certificate (recognised by the RYA).
- RYA Safety Boat certificate.
- RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work.
- Evidence of two seasons’ full-time instructing as an RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor.
- Recommendation by a Principal of a Recognised Training Centre.
HIGH FLYING
RYA Wind-Foiling Instructor Course
The RYA Windfoiling Instructor course has been created to prepare experienced instructors to introduce the new and exciting world of foiling to a larger audience in a safe and progressive manner. The course will combine on-water training and assessment of teaching skills, with shore-based sessions, covering teaching techniques and related theory topics.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 16.
- RYA Intermediate Instructor.
- RYA Sustained Flights Certificate.
- First aid certificate.
- RYA Powerboat Level 2.
- RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work.
- Health declaration form or medical questionnaire.
WINGING FREEDOM
RYA Wingsurfing/Wingfoiling Instructor Course
The RYA Wingsurfing/Wingfoiling Instructor course has been created to prepare new and experienced instructors to introduce the new and exciting world of winging to a larger audience in a safe and progressive manner. The course will combine on-water training and assessment of teaching skills, with shore-based sessions, covering teaching techniques and related theory topics.
Successful students will gain a Wingsurfing Instructor Certificate (2 day course) and a Wingfoiling Instructor Certificate (a further 2 days). Teaching within the RYA Wingsurfing Scheme is progressive – you can develop your skills and qualifications by taking further courses, working towards Wingfoiling Instructor level. If no previous RYA Instructor qualification is held, a moderation will need to take place on a fifth day.
